The Sands Khao Lak, Thailand

The Sands Khao Lak, Thailand, recently achieved a Travelife Gold award. One of the many areas the hotel excelled in was communicating their sustainability approach to key stakeholders, such as staff and guests.

The hotel provides environmental training to staff. This helps staff to do their jobs according to the hotel’s environmental policies and procedures. The training also shows why it is important and what difference sustainability can make to day-to-day hotel operations.

Communicating with staff

Staff environmental training helps give them the information they need to do their jobs while protecting the environment. In addition to the staff training events, the Sands Khao Lak uses signage around the hotel premises to remind staff how to save water and energy.

Communicating with guests

The Sands Kao Lak uses stickers in guest bedrooms to encourage guests and staff to get involved in sustainability efforts and conserve water and energy. This includes highlighting the fact that all the hotel’s waste water is re-used to irrigate their organic garden.

The hotel uses an ‘Environment leaf’ in bedrooms to encourage guests to conserve water and energy by reducing the number of times their sheets are washed.

Engaging the local community and promoting local culture

The Sands Khao Lak also engages guests in activities promoting the local culture (such as Thai cooking classes or local festivals) and environmental initiatives (such as the parade on World Environment Day featuring costumes made from recycled waste materials).
