Get Involved in the Big Beach Clean

This July your hotel can engage guests in sustainability efforts and help improve the local environment by taking part in the Making Holidays Greener ‘Big Beach Clean’. Travelife is supporting this annual event by the Travel Foundation and we encourage our members to get involved locally.

Every year The Travel Foundation (a UK charity promoting responsible tourism) organises the Making Holidays Greener campaign and this year they are asking partners to organise a local beach clean to help raise awareness about the importance of protecting the local environment and behaving responsibly while on holiday.

They are providing a series of tools for hotels and other organisations to take part. These include Top 10 tips to protect our beaches and seas and a step-by-step guide to organising a beach clean.

Why get involved?
Beaches are important for most summer holiday destinations and keeping them clean is not only vital to the tourism industry, but also for wildlife and environment. Supporting the campaign is a great way to show your customers that you care, and showcase your cleaner, greener product, while also engaging staff.

Case study – Sunrise Royal Makadi Hotel, Egypt
Thomas Cook have taken an active role in previous Making Holidays Greener campaigns, including some of their Travelife hotels joining with other tour operators and local partners to organise beach cleans. The Sunrise Royal Makadi Hotel in Egypt is an example of one of their hotels to have recently organised a beach clean.

The beach clean at the Sunrise Royal Makadi:

  • involved 23 staff
  • 32 customers
  • collected 19 kg of paper, cans, plastics, and other solid waste.

After it was collected, the rubbish was separated and sorted, and then directly sent to be recycled.

Could you achieve this as well, or do even better? We are encouraging all our Travelife hotels around the world to take part, to see what a difference we can make together.
