Improving sustainability management in Tunisia

In 2010 the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, the Tunis International Center for Environmental Technologies and Sofies consulting firm launched the Clean Production Project in Tunisia. The five-year project aimed to establish more sustainable practices in businesses, including the hospitality sector.

KUONI - a Travelife tour operator member – supported the project, funding local consultants to be trained to advise Tunisian hotels on sustainability issues and how to achieve Travelife Gold certification. 10 hotels participated and improved their environmental, social responsibility, community engagement and local development performance. Travelife was chosen as the certification scheme, and 5 hotels successfully achieved certification as a direct result of their sustainability actions, including:

  • Hotel Menara, Hammamet
  • Hotel Yadis Ibn Khaldoun, Tunis
  • Le Royal Hammamet, Hammamet
  • Méhari, Hammamet
  • The Russelior Hotel & Spa, Hammamet

To showcase the sustainability achievements across the Clean Production Project, a ceremonial event was held in Tunis on 20 May 2015. This supported the spirit of the project motto: ‘All together for a sustainable and competitive business’. The Hotel Menara and Royal Hammamet gave presentations on why they chose to take part in the project and why becoming Travelife certified is important to their business. All 5 certified hotels were then presented their prestigious award plaques, which they now display in their properties.
